What is Streaming Media?
Streaming Media is the process of transmitting compressed audio and video files via the Internet. For example, viewing a speech online, listening to an artist’s new song or taking a virtual tour of the campus just by clicking a link on a Web site are all examples of Streaming Media.

How is it different from Webcasting and Video Broadcasting?
Webcasts are a type of Streaming Media! When you view a Webcast, the audio or video is streaming to your computer. A Webcast is an event where what you see and hear is Streaming Media. Video Broadcasting is similar except it involves your television and not your computer!

Who can use the Streaming Media services?
University System of Maryland faculty, staff and students

What can Streaming Media be used for?
Streaming media can be used to broadcast your event to people who can’t attend while it’s actually happening, or for broadcasting that same event at a later date. For example, you can broadcast your lecture across the country or record an important speech on Friday and show your class on Monday. There are lots of possibilities!

What is the difference between capture and stream, and archiving?
Capture and stream implies live broadcasting of an event. If you link to the event, you will be able to view it from that point in time to the end of the event as it’s happening. Archiving is on-demand streaming. In other words, it’s viewing a pre-recorded event from start to finish anytime you access the file after the end of the actual event.

How long can you archive documents?
For as long as you are willing to lease disk space or for as long as your event maintains its academic value.

Can students use Streaming Media?

How many times can I use the services connected with Streaming Media?

If I have problems during my Streaming Media broadcast, who should I call?
All support calls can be directed to the OIT Helpdesk at (301) 405-1500. The Helpdesk will then direct your call to appropriate person or unit.

In archived versions of Streaming Media, can I edit the content?
Yes, you have access to archived content. You will be responsible for all editing. Video editing is not one of the services offered.

Although you don’t offer video editing, can you direct me to editing resources?
Aside from purchasing software such as Adobe Premiere, you may also look into services on campus offered by several organizations or colleges. Some of these include the Electronic Media Center (ARHU), MITH (ARHU) , Educational Technology Services (EDUC), and OACS (BSOS). There may be restrictions on who may use those services or what specific services are available, so be sure to contact each group for details.

How much does it cost?
Use of the server to archive or stream is free for academic purposes. All other uses and services are fee-based and can be found on our Services page.
