Streaming Media services are fee-based, but can be subsidized for instructional uses. The following guidelines describe activities and customers that will be considered for academic subsidy.

Categories: Academic | General | USM | Students

University of Maryland Academic Use

This group consists of instructors at UM who wish to incorporate Streaming Media into their curriculum. Since support of academic endeavors is one of OIT’s primary tasks any use of the streaming server or storage facilities for any academic activity will be, with but few exceptions, subsidized.

Exceptions:
If an instructor requires production assistance, they will be charged the consulting rate for the number of hours required to accommodate their needs.

All Streaming Media activities that are in support of a research project that is grant funded will be subject to charges at the rate appropriate for such services rendered.

University of Maryland General Use

This group consists of those departments, colleges, WebHosting clients, and others affiliated with the University who wish to make use of the Streaming Media services offered to promote, profile, publicize, or otherwise advance the agenda of their organizations. This group will be subject to charges for media services rendered at the rate appropriate for said services.

Exceptions:
Student organizations whose events are deemed part of the overall academic experience will be subsidized. Examples of such activities are student government activities such as debates, open forum debates, events memorializing historic events, etc.

As with academic activities already defined, such subsidies do not include production assistance.

University System of Maryland (USM) Use

This group consists of all clients from USM or from a USM school other than UM. All requests for Streaming Media services are subject to charges for media services rendered at the rate appropriate for said services. OIT reserves the right to accept such requests for Streaming Media services based on ability to devote time and resources at the time of the request.

Student Organization Use

Student Organizations may apply for subsidized streaming services provided they qualify based on the following criteria:

1. The organization must provide a one page written rationale for why the event is an academic event or enhances the academic experience.
2. The organization’s faculty sponsor must agree that the event is in support of an academic activity.
3. The faculty sponsor must get the approval of the co-sponsoring department.
